2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, George T. Keller, Jr., of Clifton Forge, a veteran of World War II who continued in public service after the war working as a firefighter, letter carrier, and with law-enforcement personnel, died on January 28, 2012; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from Clifton Forge High School, George Keller enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces in 1939; during World War II, he was part of the 447th Bombardment Squadron and earned five battle stars; and
WHEREAS, after the war, George Keller moved to Fairfax, where he became a firefighter with the District of Columbia Fire Department; he also was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and worked with the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, as a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Retired Firefighters Association of Washington, D.C., George Keller demonstrated his continued support of public safety organizations and their vital missions to protect and serve; and
WHEREAS, upon retirement, George Keller returned to Clifton Forge, becoming active in community affairs; he belonged to the Clifton Forge Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4299 and the American Legion, and he was a chairman of the Alleghany County/Covington Democratic Committee; and
WHEREAS, George Keller served his fellow citizens in retirement; he was chairman of the Alleghany County Planning Commission and contributed wise and thoughtful counsel as the commission deliberated on matters of economic growth and development; and
WHEREAS, George Keller enjoyed being outdoors in Virginia’s beautiful mountains; he was an ardent hunter and fisherman for many years; also he was a man of strong Baptist faith; and
WHEREAS, George Keller will be dearly remembered and greatly missed by his family and by his many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated public servant who worked to make his county and his community a better place, George T. Keller, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George T. Keller, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory and appreciation for his many contributions to Clifton Forge, Alleghany County, and the Commonwealth.
