12105422DWHEREAS, Steve Appleton, a husband, father, community philanthropist, and CEO of Micron Technology, passed away on February 3, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Steve Appleton graduated from Boise State University in 1982, where he excelled in tennis, winning the Big Sky doubles championship his senior year; and
WHEREAS, in 1983, Steve went to work for Micron Technology on the production line and quickly rose through the ranks to become CEO, president and chairman in 1994; and
WHEREAS, Steve Appleton fostered a culture within Micron Technology that embraced improving the communities where Micron has a presence through philanthropy, volunteerism, and civic engagement; and
WHEREAS, in 1999, Steve established the Micron Foundation, which has donated millions to furthering the improvement of education in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Steve Appleton led Micron Technology to become a global company employing over 23,000 team members worldwide, with locations in more than 20 countries in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and annual revenues of $8.9 billion; and
WHEREAS, Steve Appleton made the decision to invest in Micron Technology’s Manassas, Virginia, facility to make it one of the most advanced semiconductor facilities in the world, employing over 1,800 team members; and
WHEREAS, Steve Appleton was an industry leader serving on the board of directors of the Semiconductor Industry Association, the World Semiconductor Council, and the National Semiconductor Technology Council; and
WHEREAS, Steve Appleton was awarded the highest honor by the Semiconductor Industry Association, the 2011 Robert N. Noyce Award, for his tireless efforts to strengthen the industry and his sustained, successful leadership in the highly competitive memory business; and
WHEREAS, Steve Appleton was an accomplished pilot, motocross racer, and dedicated husband and father; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly celebrate the life and achievements of Steve Appleton, a legendary leader of Micron Technology and standard-bearer in the semiconductor industry; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Steve Appleton as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
