SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 176
Commending Graceful Spaces.

WHEREAS, Graceful Spaces was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, Inc., with a prestigious 2012 Best of Reston Award; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston Awards were established to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the greater Reston community and improving the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, Graceful Spaces, formed by Jean Boston, Karen Hale, and Anne Strange, helps families as they transition from homelessness to homeownership by providing basic furnishings, knowledge about living simply, and education about housekeeping and organizing skills; and

WHEREAS, Graceful Spaces works with each family to help turn the new house into a home with comfortable, stylish, and high-quality, secondhand furnishings that reflect the new owner’s individual tastes and needs; and

WHEREAS, Graceful Spaces has worked closely with area businesses and nonprofits such as The Bargain Loft, The Closet, and Reston Mini-Storage to fulfill its mission; and

WHEREAS, Graceful Spaces has worked with clients with physical disabilities to help them transform their new environments into safe and functional places in which to live and raise their families; and

WHEREAS, committed to protecting the environment, Graceful Spaces participated in Reston Interfaith Housing Corporation’s “Green and Graceful” project, which used environmentally friendly materials and equipment in the renovation of a townhouse; and

WHEREAS, Graceful Spaces was recognized for its outstanding organization and decoration when one of the townhouses it worked on, an affordable housing unit with Reston Interfaith, was listed on the Reston Home Tour in 2010; and

WHEREAS, since 2008, Graceful Spaces has helped 59 families and 143 children settle into their new homes and begin new chapters in their lives; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Graceful Spaces on its outstanding service to the residents of Northern Virginia and on its well-deserved honor as a 2012 Best of Reston Award recipient; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Graceful Spaces as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for its tireless dedication to Reston.
