2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, David Curtin of Springfield, one of nine Virginia athletes who competed at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, captured a silver medal in the men’s 18-hole golf tournament at the international competition; and
WHEREAS, over 7,500 athletes traveled to the historic city of Athens, Greece, to participate in the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games held June 25–July 4, 2011; and
WHEREAS, David Curtin began his golf career playing with a set of plastic clubs in his backyard, gradually progressing to the driving range before playing his first 18-hole golf course at the age of 14; and
WHEREAS, an accomplished athlete, David Curtin has been a longtime participant in Special Olympics, refining his golf game over the years and also playing softball; and
WHEREAS, David Curtin took home gold in golf at the Special Olympics 2010 USA National Games held in Nebraska and, in May of 2011, he had the unique opportunity to play alongside LPGA golfer Stephanie Louden in the Azalea Charities Pro-Am Invitational, scoring a 107 for 18 holes; and
WHEREAS, prior to the opening of the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, David Curtin had the opportunity to meet Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, who attended the games as part of a presidential delegation; and
WHEREAS, during the competition, David Curtin, whose father caddied for him, demonstrated the importance of hard work, practice, and determination as he won the silver medal in the men’s 18-hole golf tournament; and
WHEREAS, a talented golfer and inspiring role model, David Curtin proudly represented Springfield, the Commonwealth, and the nation at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate David Curtin on his outstanding Special Olympics golf career and his exemplary performance in Athens, Greece, at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to David Curtin as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his dedication to the Special Olympics, his fellow athletes, and the sport of golf.
