2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, Bernard Jaffe, a noted Tidewater area real estate developer whose philanthropic endeavors enriched the lives of countless individuals, died on May 29, 2011; and
WHEREAS, a native of Schenectady, New York, Bernard Jaffe graduated from Manual Training High School and went to work in the Baltimore shipyards as a rigger, gaining the respect and trust of his fellow workers as the secretary of the local union; and
WHEREAS, as the United States became embroiled in World War II, Bernard Jaffe joined the war effort, serving in the 9th Infantry Division, 1st Battalion, Company A at the Battle of the Bulge and earning three battle stars and a Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, after the war, Bernard Jaffe returned to civilian life, eventually working for his cousin’s building company, where he gained invaluable experience; he then branched out and started his own company; and
WHEREAS, a hardworking and successful businessman, Bernard Jaffe spent 10 years in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area and then partnered with two other businessmen to establish JCF, a real estate development company that focused on apartment communities and shopping centers in Hampton Roads; and
WHEREAS, Bernard Jaffe’s thoughtful generosity to local organizations greatly benefited area residents and enhanced the community’s cultural, medical, and academic offerings; and
WHEREAS, in 2007, Bernard Jaffe, with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, established the Jaffe Jewish Family Services of Budapest, Hungary, to provide emergency relief, after-school programs, psychological counseling, and other services; and
WHEREAS, Bernard Jaffe was honored for his extraordinary contributions with a Krug Award from the Jewish Community Center and the Tomas L. Hofheimer Humanitarian Award from the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater; and
WHEREAS, a man of many interests and talents, Bernard Jaffe was an avid supporter of the Old Dominion University Monarchs basketball programs, enjoyed the symphony and opera, and spent countless hours playing racquetball, capturing the Virginia State Racquetball Golden Masters Division Championship in 1981; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Lee, Bernard Jaffe leaves behind to cherish his memory, children, Melissa, Nathan, and Karen, and their families; numerous other family members and friends; and those whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected businessman and philanthropist, Bernard Jaffe; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Bernard Jaffe as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
