SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 150
Celebrating the life of Virginius Harding Nusbaum, Jr.

WHEREAS, Virginius Harding Nusbaum, Jr., the former president of S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., who played a pivotal role in the growth and development of the Hampton Roads area, died on August 15, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Maury High School, Virginius “V.H.” Nusbaum served in the Virginia National Guard and interrupted his studies at the University of Virginia to take over the helm of the family business as its third-generation leader; and

WHEREAS, V.H. Nusbaum expanded upon his grandfather’s and father’s business legacy, leading S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co. through a period of explosive growth that included the development and management of apartment complexes, high-rise buildings, and shopping centers; and

WHEREAS, a respected business leader in the community, V.H. Nusbaum founded and served as vice chair of the board of directors of First National Bank of Norfolk; and

WHEREAS, a proud resident of Norfolk, V.H. Nusbaum took an active role in city affairs, serving on various city committees and boards and as vice mayor while on the Norfolk City Council, supporting the Norfolk Neptunes football team, and encouraging the revitalization of Norfolk’s downtown; and

WHEREAS, V.H. Nusbaum worked alongside other civic-minded citizens to encourage Walter Chrysler, Jr., to donate his legendary art collection to the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, which resulted in the renaming of the museum as the Chrysler Museum of Art and greatly enhanced the institution’s offerings to the residents of Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, committed to the well-being of his hometown, V.H. Nusbaum made an indelible mark on Norfolk and the Hampton Roads area while leaving a thriving business to his family’s future generations; and

WHEREAS, V.H. Nusbaum took great pride in his family and leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife, Nancy; son, Alan, and his family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired citizen of the Commonwealth, Virginius Harding Nusbaum, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Virginius Harding Nusbaum, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
