2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, Roy Gordon, who started the University of Mary Washington (UMW) soccer program in 1977 and coached the men’s soccer team to 386 victories, was honored for his many achievements with induction into the Virginia-DC Soccer Hall of Fame on February 3, 2012; and
WHEREAS, during his coaching career, Roy Gordon’s ability to bring out the best in his players and his winning record were acknowledged in many ways; he was Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Coach of the Year numerous times and he was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional Coach of the Year five times; and
WHEREAS, before starting the soccer program at UMW in Fredericksburg, Roy Gordon was head soccer coach at the University of Maine-Farmington; with his 46 wins there, he has a total of 432 career victories; and
WHEREAS, when Roy Gordon, who was named Virginia State College Division Coach of the Year four times, reached the 400-victory mark in 2007, he had few equals as he was one of only eight NCAA Division III coaches to reach that goal; his career record is 432–253–53; and
WHEREAS, Roy Gordon’s UMW teams played in nine NCAA tournaments and won eight CAC titles; from the time the Eagles first made an appearance in the NCAA tournament in 1985, the teams subsequently amassed an outstanding .698 win/loss percentage—winning more than two-thirds of their games; and
WHEREAS, Roy Gordon, one of the most respected soccer coaches in the country, is a former president of the 25,000-member NSCAA and remains active in the organization; in 2009, he received the NSCAA’s prestigious Honor Award; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend longtime University of Mary Washington men’s soccer coach and 2012 Virginia-DC Soccer Hall of Fame inductee Roy Gordon; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Roy Gordon as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for his outstanding coaching accomplishments and his work with some of Virginia’s finest athletes.
