12104070DWHEREAS, Dr. Daniel B. Fleming, Jr., a noted government and social studies educator who taught at Virginia Tech for 22 years, died on December 17, 2011; and
WHEREAS, the son of former West Virginia state senator Dan Fleming and his wife, Ruth Sayre Fleming, Dan Fleming, Jr., served as an unofficial mascot for the 1939–1940 New York World’s Fair at the age of seven, when his father was chosen as a commissioner for the West Virginia exhibit; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of St. Marys High School, Dan Fleming received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from West Virginia University, later continuing his graduate work at Harvard University and earning a doctorate from George Washington University; and
WHEREAS, Dan Fleming proudly served his country in the United States Army before embarking on his distinguished career in education as a teacher at Marietta High School, sharing his passion for history and government with students and serving as president of the Marietta Education Association; and
WHEREAS, following study in India as a Fulbright scholar, Dan Fleming served as a Congressional Fellow of the American Political Science Association and gained valuable experience as a legislative aide in the United State House of Representatives and Senate; and
WHEREAS, in 1964, Dan Fleming joined the Fairfax County Public Schools system and, as the social studies supervisor, helped develop an innovative social studies program that ignited students’ interest in social studies and gave fellow educators a roadmap for instruction; and
WHEREAS, as a professor at Virginia Tech, Dan Fleming earned the respect of his colleagues for his commitment to education and contributions to his field, which included authoring or co-authoring textbooks, publishing articles in professional journals, chairing social studies task forces, consulting with national and state school systems and organizations, and serving in national organizations; and
WHEREAS, Dan Fleming taught thousands of students over the course of his illustrious career and was honored for his endeavors by the Virginia Council for the Social Studies with its Outstanding Social Studies Educator Award; and
WHEREAS, Dan Fleming took a particular interest in the Kennedy years, having serving as chair of the Pleasants County Citizens for Kennedy as a young man, and writing Kennedy vs. Humphrey, West Virginia, 1960: The Pivotal Battle for the Democratic Presidential Nomination and ...Ask What You Can Do For Your Country: The Memory and Legacy of John F. Kennedy; and
WHEREAS, Dan Fleming also served as chair of AARP’s state legislative committee, was active in the Montgomery County Democratic Party, and wrote commentaries for the Roanoke Times; and
WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Dan Fleming will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 48 years, Beverly; daughters, Katharine, Elizabeth, and Susan, and their families; numerous other family members and friends; and former students and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of admired educator and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Daniel B. Fleming, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Daniel B. Fleming, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
