SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 124
Celebrating the life of John C. Holland, Jr.

WHEREAS, John C. Holland, Jr., of Arrington, a successful businessman and generous community supporter, died on December 16, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of Portsmouth, John Holland possessed a strong will and work ethic that was matched only by his devotion to helping others; and

WHEREAS, the president of two companies, John C. Holland Enterprises and Hampton Roads Disposal, both located in Suffolk, John Holland was also a partner in the Greater Dismal Swamp Restoration Bank, a wetlands restoration company; and

WHEREAS, in 1989, John Holland bought, along with his late father, historic Oak Ridge Estate, located in Arrington, a small community nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Nelson County, and made his home there while commuting to the Hampton Roads area for business; and

WHEREAS, John Holland deeply appreciated the fine architecture and furnishings of the home and used many items from his salvage business in restoring the 200-year-old mansion to its former glory, graciously opening restored areas and gardens to the public; and

WHEREAS, a kind-hearted man, John Holland took an active, but often behind-the-scenes role in community affairs, reaching out to individuals and organizations in need in both Nelson County and the Hampton Roads area with amazing generosity; and

WHEREAS, a respected leader in his field, John Holland had recently been appointed by Governor McDonnell to the Board for Waste Management Facility Operators; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his son, John III, John Holland will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife of 34 years, Rhonda; daughters, Heather and Reagan, and their families; and other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a remarkable Virginian, John C. Holland, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John C. Holland, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
