Commending the First Colonial High School field hockey team.

WHEREAS, for the first time in school history, the First Colonial High School field hockey team captured the 2011 state field hockey championship, thereby joining an elite group of Virginia Beach high schools that dominate the competition; and

WHEREAS, the Patriots stayed in control of the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group AAA title game against Stafford High School the entire time and were never behind in the match-up; and

WHEREAS, the First Colonial High School field hockey team scored the first goal in the championship just two minutes into the game, and all remaining points were made in the second half, leading to their triumphant victory over Stafford High School; and

WHEREAS, the players for First Colonial High School were determined to win the championship this season after losing a semi-final game to Lakeland High School in 2010; and

WHEREAS, in the championship game against the Stafford High School Indians (21–4), the Patriots (23–1) outshot their opponent 20–1 and also had an 11–1 advantage in penalty corners; and

WHEREAS, the First Colonial High School team’s victory adds to the Virginia Beach region’s field hockey trophy case, as teams from Virginia Beach have taken the Group AAA title 25 times since the tournament began in 1977; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the First Colonial High School field hockey team on its victory in the 2011 Group AAA state championship game; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Laura “Beanie” Schleicher, coach of the field hockey team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the First Colonial High School field hockey team’s outstanding performance.
