SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 102
Celebrating the life of Simone Savia.

WHEREAS, Simone Savia, a longtime member of the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, a loving husband and father, an active participant at his church, and a contributor to his community in many other ways, died on December 9, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Simone “Sam” Savia’s lifelong volunteer service to the community of Vienna was evident in his 70 years of duty to the fire department; he joined the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department when he was 15 and was elected secretary at age 16; and

WHEREAS, in honor of his many years of fighting fires and promoting fire prevention efforts, the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department recently named the department’s apparatus bay after Sam Savia and also presented him with a ceremonial fire ax; and

WHEREAS, Sam Savia, who held many leadership roles at the fire department in his seven decades of service, continued to do so in 2011, serving on the history committee and helping at bingo night fund-raisers; he lived within walking distance of the fire station his entire life; and

WHEREAS, in his lifetime, Sam Savia saw many improvements in how fires are fought; when he was a young firefighter, water was pumped from streams, ponds, and the town’s cisterns, but once water and sewer systems were installed, the resulting fire hydrants made firefighting much easier; and

WHEREAS, Sam Savia’s allegiance to the community in which he was born included 50 years of membership in the Vienna Host Lions Club, involvement with Vienna Little League Baseball from its inception, and active membership and usher duties at St. Mark Catholic Church; and

WHEREAS, other honors bestowed upon Sam Savia include being inducted into the Virginia Firefighters Hall of Fame, and in 2006 he was selected as the ViennaTysons Regional Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Sam Savia, whose professional career was with C & P Telephone, was predeceased by his son, David, and is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Gertrude, and his children, Lynn, Karen, and Mary, and other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of volunteer firefighter and respected citizen Simone Savia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Simone Savia as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory and appreciation for his many contributions to the Town of Vienna.
