2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, assistance for the young in their development into a well-rounded, productive adulthood is one of the fundamental obligations of any honorable society; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers was conceived in 1904 by a clerk of the courts of New York City, Ernest Kent Coulter, in compassion for the numerous boys who came before the judges of the city’s courts; and
WHEREAS, Ernest Kent Coulter believed that adults, in volunteering their engagement with the young, could respond constructively to the needs of boys of the early twentieth century; and
WHEREAS, the organization that Mr. Coulter founded, Big Brothers, soon captured the imagination—and the energies—of responsible adults in numerous American cities; and
WHEREAS, in time, Big Brothers was combined with a similar endeavor for girls to form the Big Brothers Big Sisters program; and
WHEREAS, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Virginia Alliance has observed “National Mentoring Month” in January 2012; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters assists thousands of young Virginians by providing them with individual mentoring that enables the children to acquire the virtues and social skills necessary to live pleasing and productive lives; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters cooperates with public schools and also with other not-for-profit organizations throughout the Commonwealth in providing mentoring services to the young; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters has instituted the first statewide program available to the children of men and women undergoing incarceration; and
WHEREAS, every generation must respond to the challenges of the young; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Members of the body commend the professional staff and in particular the numerous volunteers whose devotion to Big Brothers Big Sisters is making an indelible impression for the good in the lives of thousands of Virginian boys and girls; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Richmond chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters as an encouragement to others to assist an organization that provides singular services to the young people of our Commonwealth.
