12105855DWHEREAS, Wayne M. Harrell served with diligence and effectiveness as a member of the Sussex County Board of Supervisors from January 1, 2000, through December 31, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Wayne M. Harrell paid close attention to the needs of the people of Sussex County; as the former postmaster of Waverly, Wayne Harrell knew numerous constituents and was a familiar presence to many others; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure on the board of supervisors, Wayne Harrell was a dedicated member of several committees, including the Building Committee, the Regional Jail Committee, and the Sussex Service Authority, and he served on the board of Virginia’s Gateway Region; and
WHEREAS, Wayne Harrell, who attended Waverly High School and Shenandoah College, was a strong supporter of education; while on the Sussex County Board of Supervisors, the county’s middle school was renovated to provide a space conducive to learning; and
WHEREAS, a new county maintenance facility was built while Wayne Harrell served on the board of supervisors, and he actively promoted and was able to maintain a low tax rate for county residents and businesses; and
WHEREAS, Wayne Harrell has stayed active in his community; he was a member of the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad for 10 years of on-call service and 40 years as treasurer of the squad’s board of directors, and he has 41 years of perfect attendance with the Waverly Ruritan Club; and
WHEREAS, Wayne Harrell, an avid baseball fan, proudly recalls his last game of church softball, when at age 70, he shared the field with two of his grandsons; currently, he and his son are close to achieving their goal of visiting every major league ballpark—their task will be complete in the summer of 2012 when they attend major league games in Tampa and Miami; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That an admired and effective public servant, Wayne M. Harrell, hereby be commended; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Wayne M. Harrell as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and admiration for his many years of service to the citizens of Sussex County and to the Commonwealth.
