Celebrating the life of Harris L. Parker.

WHEREAS, Harris L. Parker, a strong and visionary leader in Sussex County, who was chairman of the board of supervisors, died on December 7, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a highly decorated veteran of the United States Army, Harris Parker admirably served Sussex County as chief magistrate of Virginia’s Sixth Judicial District from 1992 until 2005; he then served as a member of the Sussex County Board of Supervisors for four years; and

WHEREAS, a man with strong leadership skills, Harris Parker had a zest for life and displayed a practical and no-nonsense approach to governing that combined strength, wisdom, and compassion in a steadfast effort to move Sussex County forward; and

WHEREAS, Harris Parker focused on getting things done and urged the residents and leaders of Sussex County to look ahead and plan for the future; he strongly encouraged infrastructure improvements and economic development efforts as a means to accomplish those goals; and

WHEREAS, Harris Parker was a noncommissioned officer in the United States Army who served in Vietnam and Bosnia and in Desert Storm; he earned the Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and was a member of the United States Army Ranger Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Harris Parker will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his family, his friends, and the people of Sussex County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of an effective and dedicated public servant and an outstanding Virginian, Harris L. Parker; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Harris L. Parker as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and appreciation for his service to Sussex County, to the Commonwealth, and to the nation.
