Commending Glen Manor Vineyards.

WHEREAS, Glen Manor Vineyards, located in Front Royal, was honored to be awarded the 2012 Virginia Governor’s Cup for its 2009 Hodder Hill Meritage; and

WHEREAS, the Governor’s Cup competition, a partnership among the Virginia Wine Board, Virginia Wineries Association, and Virginia Vineyards Association, was directed by Jay Youmans, one of only 31 Masters of Wine in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the 2012 Virginia Governor’s Cup Competition was conducted in two stages—the first round took place in mid-January in Alexandria with 28 judges and the final round took place in late January in Richmond with 15 judges; and

WHEREAS, the 2009 Hodder Hill Meritage was selected from the 2012 Governor’s Cup Case, the top 12 scoring wines of the competition from among more than 400 entries; and

WHEREAS, the 2009 Hodder Hill Meritage is a complex blend of 63 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Merlot, six percent Cabernet Franc, and six percent Pertit Verdot; and

WHEREAS, the award-winning wine produced at Glen Manor Vineyards came from grapes grown on the steep western flank of the Blue Ridge Mountains; the slope allows water to shed quickly, enhancing the grapes’ flavor; and

WHEREAS, Alpheus Lee and Anna Rae White and their three sons own the winery and vineyards located on the farm that has been in their family for generations; and

WHEREAS, Jeff White, a former financial analyst and one of the owners of Glen Manor Vineyards, returned to the family farm and originally raised cattle and Christmas trees before researching the Virginia wine industry; and

WHEREAS, Jeff White gained valuable insight from Dr. Tony Wolf, director of the Alson H. Smith Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and worked for Jim Law of Linden Vineyards, who served as a mentor and teacher, before establishing Glen Manor Vineyards in 2005; and

WHEREAS, Jeff White’s years of hard work have resulted in the production at Glen Manor Vineyards of the 2012 Virginia Governor’s Cup winner, the 2009 Hodder Hill Meritage; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Glen Manor Vineyards hereby be commended on being awarded the 2012 Virginia Governor’s Cup for its 2009 Hodder Hill Meritage; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jeff White, owner and operator of Glen Manor Vineyards, and to the White family, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and appreciation for the vineyard’s contributions to the Virginia wine industry.
