HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 48
Commending Randolph Elementary School.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 8, 2012

 

WHEREAS, in 2012 Randolph Elementary School, located at 1306 S. Quincy Street in the Douglas Park community of Arlington County, will proudly celebrate 65 years of providing comprehensive and quality education for students; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Elementary is named for Peyton Randolph, a key figure in United States and Virginia history, who played a pivotal role in Virginia Assembly meetings in the years leading up to the Revolutionary War, became one of the colony’s first great men to oppose the Stamp Act, and chaired the First Continental Congress at Philadelphia in 1774 and the Second in 1775; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Elementary is home to Arlington County’s 2011 Teacher of the Year, third grade teacher Matt Tosiello; and

WHEREAS, students attending Randolph Elementary represent 41 different countries and 20 different languages; and

WHEREAS, the breadth of cultures and languages truly makes Randolph Elementary School a United Nations of learning communities; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Elementary School was fully authorized as a Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate on March 10, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Elementary School joined the elite ranks of only six schools in Virginia and fewer than 300 elementary schools worldwide that have an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Elementary School’s programs include instruction in foreign language (Spanish), community service activities, and student-developed portfolios; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Elementary School teaches students to achieve accomplishments beyond individual success by helping them experience and improve their local community; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Elementary School works in tight collaboration with the community and dedicated parents to provide important programs such as the annual Book Fair, Walk for the Homeless/Halloween Parade, Fall and Spring Yard Clean Up, Family Learning Saturdays, Young Authors and Illustrators, Spaghetti Dinner Night and Silent Auction, Dancing Under the Stars, and monthly Family Literacy Nights; and

WHEREAS, in partnership with Arlington Housing Corporation, Randolph Elementary applied for and was awarded an unprecedented third Virginia Department of Education 21st Century Learning Community Grant, which will provide funding for a three-year program to support 75 students in grades three, four, and five with math, reading, and creative activities in the CSI Kids After School program; and

WHEREAS, the curriculum at Randolph Elementary extends beyond the classroom as the school continues to enjoy vibrant partnerships with the Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network, United States Army Test and Evaluation Command, Woman’s Club of Arlington, United States Army Field Band, National Park Service, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Randolph Elementary School hereby be commended on the occasion of its 65th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Renee Bostick, principal of Randolph Elementary School, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ gratitude for the school’s commitment to the young people of Arlington County and best wishes for a joyful 65th anniversary celebration.
