12105780DWHEREAS, John J. Toner of Fairfax, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on August 5, 2011; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from Antioch College, John Toner served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1948, where he served as honor man of his ship; he later earned a master’s degree from George Washington University; and
WHEREAS, John Toner and his family resided in Rome, New York, from 1948 to 1954, where he worked for the Ground Electronics Engineering and Installation Agency; he later became deputy director of communications at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) in Washington, D.C., and the family settled in Fairfax City; and
WHEREAS, John Toner practiced a precision of speech and was a lover of words; he was a community activist and as a youth football coach, he worked to set up baseball leagues in Fairfax and also served on the local Community Appearance Committee; and
WHEREAS, John Toner, who was predeceased by his son, John, will be greatly missed by Gloria, his wife of 55 years; his son, Mark; his grandson, Michael; and by many other family members and friends who are left to lovingly cherish the memory of a magical man; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a devoted family man and a person who worked for the betterment of his community, John J. Toner; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John J. Toner as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
