Celebrating the life of Jizeng Chen.

WHEREAS, Jizeng Chen, the highly respected founder of Asian Fortune, the only English language paper covering the Pan-Asian community in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area, died on January 31, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a native of Tianjin, China, Jizeng “Jay” Chen began his career in journalism as a reporter for China’s prestigious Xinhua News Agency, where he gained valuable experience that helped him in his future endeavors; and

WHEREAS, in 1985 Jay Chen was selected as an East-West Center Fellow and traveled to Hawaii to study journalism at the University of Hawaii; he later earned a master’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and worked as a translator at Voice of America; and

WHEREAS, in 1993 Jay Chen drew upon his journalism background to found a monthly publication, Asian Fortune, to meet the needs of the Pan-Asian community in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area; and

WHEREAS, Jay Chen took great pride in uniting the Pan-Asian community through the sharing of news and local events in Asian Fortune, which reaches hundreds of thousands of readers; and

WHEREAS, an admired business and community leader, Jay Chen will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving family members and friends and numerous admirers throughout the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated community leader and outstanding Virginian, Jizeng Chen; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jizeng Chen as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
