HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 36
Celebrating the life of Barbara Williams Hahne.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 2, 2012

 

WHEREAS, Barbara Williams Hahne, a native of Missouri and a resident of McLean for the past 39 years, died on September 1, 2011; and

WHEREAS, after attending Central Methodist University, Barbara Hahne worked as a staff member in the welfare office of the State of Missouri, serving the needy people of Central Missouri; and

WHEREAS, after moving to St. Louis County, Missouri, with her husband, Robert Hahne, Sr., Barbara Hahne became a mother of three sons, Jeffrey, Jerry, and Robert, Jr., and was an active member of parent-teacher associations and various youth programs; and

WHEREAS, in following the career moves of her husband with Deloitte and Touche, Barbara Hahne directed the family as they moved to New York and then on to McLean; and

WHEREAS, in McLean, Barbara Hahne became very active in the Redeemer Lutheran Church, serving the youth in the church’s preschool and as a Sunday school teacher and lay minister of education, as well as many other positions including president of the church council; and

WHEREAS, as the mother of three athletic sons, Barbara Hahne served on the board of McLean Little League and the Langley High School Boosters Club and as the team mother for many sports teams, including state championship teams from the McLean Great Falls Babe Ruth League; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Hahne’s dedication to young people included a number of years serving on the board of Alternative House, a teen counseling facility in Fairfax County; and

WHEREAS, after Barbara Hahne’s children were grown, she took up golf and was active in leading the nine-hole ladies at Westwood Country Club into team matches and tournaments; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Hahne’s involvement with Partner for Surgery (PFS) included fundraising and starting a program of preparing handmade bags filled with love and gifts for the Mayan children in Guatemala who have had surgery through PFS; and

WHEREAS, in participating with her husband in the activities of the Rotary Club of McLean, Barbara Hahne started the McLean community effort to prepare one million meals for the starving people of the world with the help of the Stop Hunger Now organization (SHN); and

WHEREAS, at the time of Barbara Hahne’s passing, three events had been completed producing 450,000 of those meals with an organization in place to complete the initial goal; this program has energized numerous other organizations carrying out similar events with SHN; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Hahne will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband of 52 years, Robert; her three sons, Jeffrey, Jerry, and Robert, Jr., and their families, including five grandchildren; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Barbara Williams Hahne; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Barbara Williams Hahne as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
