Celebrating the life of Elbernia Elizabeth Copeland Lee.

WHEREAS, Elbernia Elizabeth Copeland Lee, a familiar face in the Whaleyville community of Suffolk whose life was marked by steadfast service to those around her, died on February 20, 2012; and

WHEREAS, born on August 13, 1919, in Nansemond County to Elijah and Elnora Dillard Copeland, Elbernia Lee graduated from Dickerson High School in Jersey City, New Jersey, and attended Elizabeth City State Teachers College (now University) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, a devoted mother and wife, Elbernia Lee married Albert Linwood Lee a year after graduating from high school; they spent the next 49 years together and took great pride in watching their three children grow and develop; and

WHEREAS, in 1958 Elbernia Lee joined the Suffolk Public Schools system as a food service worker at the Nansemond County Training School/Southwestern High School cafeteria, later becoming manager and then director of the food service department; and

WHEREAS, in her role in the food service department, Elbernia Lee not only provided the physical food to nourish students’ bodies as they studied, but gave spiritual and emotional sustenance as well with her smiling face and kind words and deeds; and

WHEREAS, an involved citizen, Elbernia Lee also served as a poll worker for more than 20 years at the Whaleyville precinct, greeting fellow residents as they exercised their right to vote and working diligently to ensure the fair and honest administration of elections; and

WHEREAS, a longtime member of Corinth Chapel United Church of Christ, Elbernia Lee ably served as church clerk for more than 35 years, ensuring the records of the church were accurate and preserved for future generations; and

WHEREAS, known and admired for her sweet spirit and commitment to serving others, Elbernia Lee touched the lives of countless individuals over the course of her long and productive life; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Albert, Elbernia Lee leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Jean, Albert, and Lexie, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved citizen of Suffolk, Elbernia Elizabeth Copeland Lee; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Elbernia Elizabeth Copeland Lee as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
