Celebrating the life of David Goodrich Monette.

WHEREAS, David Goodrich Monette, a devoted husband and father, successful businessman, and a supporter of the arts in the Tidewater region, died on January 11, 2012; and

WHEREAS, David Monette, who spent most of his life in the Suffolk area and established deep roots there, was a 1955 graduate of Smithfield High School; he entered the United States Marine Corps after high school and was on active duty until 1958; and

WHEREAS, while serving in the Marine Corps Reserve, David Monette earned an associate’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and then joined the family brokerage business, V.H. Monette and Company, as European division sales manager; and

WHEREAS, V.H. Monette and Company represented manufacturers to the military resale system, and during his time with the company, David Monette was vice president of sales and marketing and became president after his father’s death in 1974; and

WHEREAS, following the company’s 1986 merger with Overseas Service Corporation, David Monette worked as a consultant, then briefly retired before embarking on a career with Quikrete Company’s Pre-Mix Industries for several years, taking permanent retirement in 2000; and

WHEREAS, David Monette maintained an interest in education and the arts; he was chairman of the board of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, and in 1986 he established a successful art show and sale at the school which is now in its 26th year; and

WHEREAS, a strong supporter of civic, religious, and nonprofit organizations, David Monette also furthered the cause of higher education in the Commonwealth as a trustee of Hampden-Sydney College; and

WHEREAS, David Monette will be greatly missed by his wife, Georgellen; his children, Noelle and Colin, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of an outstanding Virginian and a loving husband and father, David Goodrich Monette; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of David Goodrich Monette as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
