Celebrating the life of Arthur Jan Jernigan.

WHEREAS, Arthur Jan Jernigan of Roanoke, a devoted husband and father, and a United States Air Force veteran, passed away on October 9, 2011; and

WHEREAS, as the son of the late Enoch Arthur Jernigan and Mary Elsie Jernigan, Arthur Jernigan was born into a family that eventually numbered eight boys—Arthur, his twin, Enoch, as well as Paul, Robert, Dexter, Royal, and the late William and Donald; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Jernigan received his education in the Salem Public Schools, graduating from George Washington Carver High School in 1960; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Jernigan and his twin, Enoch, both chose to serve their country, enlisting in the United States Air Force after their high school graduation; and

WHEREAS, after his honorable discharge, Arthur Jernigan worked for three great American industries, beginning his professional life at Ford Motor Company in Chicago before moving back to Roanoke in 1970, where he was employed by General Electric; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Jernigan returned to the transportation field for the remainder of his career; he was a valued and responsible 25-year employee of US Airways before retiring; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Jernigan worshipped at Slate Hill Baptist Church and then enjoyed the fellowship and worship at Spirit of Life Church International, where he had many caring and devoted friends; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Jernigan is survived by his wife of 47 years, Perlina Maxine Jernigan, whom he wed on Christmas Eve in 1964; he also is survived by three daughters, Tracy, Natasha, and Brandy, and their families; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Arthur Jan Jernigan; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Arthur Jan Jernigan as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
