WHEREAS, Anthony H. Griffin will retire as county executive of Fairfax County after more than 40 years of public service, including serving as deputy county manager of Arlington County, city manager of the City of Falls Church, and deputy county executive of Fairfax County; he began his notable career in public service as a junior officer in the United States Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam; and

WHEREAS, Anthony H. “Tony” Griffin graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington and Hobart College in Geneva, New York; he earned both a master’s degree in urban affairs and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Virginia Tech in 1975 and 1977, respectively, and attended the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia in 1986; and

WHEREAS, Tony Griffin has held numerous other positions associated with public service, including chair of the Chief Administrative Officers for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; chair of the Chief Administrative Officers Homeland Security Executive Committee; and principal from Fairfax County on the Rail to Dulles Project, the Blue Plains Committee, and the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority; and

WHEREAS, during Tony Griffin’s tenure as county executive, Fairfax County maintained a Triple A rating from all three rating agencies and was given the highest rank out of 40 counties evaluated for the Government Performance Project by the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and Governing magazine for 2001 - 2002; and

WHEREAS, during his years of public service, Tony Griffin has been recognized by his peers, garnering numerous awards from the International City/County Management Association, including the Award for Program Excellence; the Award for Local Government Education; the Award for Career Excellence; and Awards for Distinction of Performance Measurement 2003 to present; and

WHEREAS, Tony Griffin is well informed and provides excellent guidance, support, and counsel to the Board of Supervisors and county staff; has a consistent and calm demeanor, strong character, and integrity; and always gives primary consideration to the welfare of Fairfax County residents and staff; and

WHEREAS, Tony Griffin has a style that is modest and unassuming, yet highly effective, and has built a professional “can-do” results-oriented staff in Fairfax County Government; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Anthony H. Griffin, a dedicated public servant and native Virginian, on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Anthony H. Griffin as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his years of noteworthy service to the residents of Fairfax County.
