Commending Micron Technology, Inc.

WHEREAS, Micron Technology, Inc., acquired the Dominion Semiconductor facility located in Manassas, Virginia, on April 22, 2002, and committed to making it a world class semiconductor facility; and

WHEREAS, Micron Technology formally announced on November 4, 2005, that it invested $1 billion to modernize the facility and deploy Micron’s first 300mm technology and hire an additional 860 new full-time employees; and

WHEREAS, Micron Technology’s investment in Virginia is over $3.4 billion since 2002; and

WHEREAS, Micron Technology produces both DRAM and NAND memory products that go in virtually all electronic products consumers enjoy every day; and

WHEREAS, the products produced by Micron Technology represent Virginia’s number one export since 2006 and showcase Virginia as a world leader in technology; and

WHEREAS, Micron Technology employs over 1,800 full-time employees and an additional 200 contractors on an annual basis; and

WHEREAS, Micron Technology contributes over $378 million to Virginia’s economy annually and supports an additional 2,200 jobs in Virginia as determined by Dr. Stephen Fuller, Director, Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University; and

WHEREAS, Micron Technology has been recognized for its environmental stewardship with the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award in 2010, 2009, and 2005 and the Virginia Environmental Excellence (VEEP) Award; and

WHEREAS, Micron Technology was honored to host President George W. Bush on February 6, 2007, when he recognized Micron for helping to support the national economy through continued investment and job creation in states such as Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Micron and the Micron Foundation have donated more than $4.2 million since 2005 to the Commonwealth of Virginia in its commitment to create a better place to live, work, and play; and

WHEREAS, Micron and the Micron Foundation have a history of commitment to promoting educational opportunities, specifically in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); and

WHEREAS, Micron Technology has been instrumental in helping launch key civic, educational, and cultural institutions in the Prince William region, including Leadership Prince William, the Prince William Chamber of Commerce, the Governor’s School at Innovation Park, and the Hylton Performing Arts Center at George Mason University; and

WHEREAS, Micron Technology is committed to civic engagement and bettering Virginia’s education system through active participation in the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program (CGEP); Fairfax County Public Schools-Chantilly Academy Advisory Board; FIRST Robotics Advisory Board and FIRST LEGO League; George Mason University (GMU) Volgenau School of Engineering Advisory Board and GMU’s VISTA program; Governor’s Commission on Higher Education Reform, Innovation and Investment; Manassas City Public Schools Education Foundation Board; Northern Virginia Technology Council’s Equal Footing Foundation Board; Prince William Public Schools (PWCS) Education Foundation (SPARK) Board and PWCS Career and Technical Education (CTE) Advisory Council and CTE Foundation Board; Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Educational Foundation Board and NOVA’s SySTEMic Solutions Advisory Council; Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board (NVWIB); Securing Emergency Resources through Volunteer Efforts (SERVE)/Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS); VEX Robotics; Virginia Commonwealth University Engineering School Advisory Board; and Virginia Tech Engineering School Advisory Board; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Micron Technology on the occasion of its 10th anniversary in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Micron Technology as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for Micron Technology’s 10 years of being an outstanding corporate citizen and vital economic engine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
