2012 SESSION
12105100DWHEREAS, Snow’s Garden and Landscaping Center, family owned and operated for 100 years, celebrates its centennial of providing plants, trees, shrubs, landscaping, tree removal—and hosting the popular SnowKnows gardening radio show—to budding horticulturists in the Charlottesville area; and
WHEREAS, the company began in 1912 when Leroy H. Snow, his wife, Maggie, and their newborn son moved to Charlottesville from upstate New York; the couple sold plants and vegetables in a market garden from a lot on Carlton Avenue southeast of downtown; and
WHEREAS, in its early days, the company was known informally as “Snow’s” or “Snow’s lot”; not long after its founding the Snow family purchased a greenhouse and moved it from Pantops Mountain to the Carlton Avenue site, eventually opening a store in a large house on the same street; and
WHEREAS, Leroy and Maggie’s son, Leroy W. Snow, took over Snow’s Nursery in 1936; the company expanded into tree and shrub sales, established maintenance and landscaping services, and provided tree removal and replanting assistance; and
WHEREAS, one of the company’s signature offerings started in 1950, when Leroy W. Snow began giving tips and gardening advice on the radio; the show, SnowKnows, continues today, broadcast on WINA 1070 AM radio weekly, and is going strong 59 years later; and
WHEREAS, in 1978 Duane Snow, Leroy W. Snow’s son, and his wife, Rena, assumed the management of Snow’s Garden and Landscape Center; more space was needed, so the couple moved the business to Avon Street Extended; and
WHEREAS, the fourth generation of the family currently runs Snow’s Garden and Landscaping Center; Corbin Snow, the son of Duane and Rena Snow, shares ownership of the company with his business partner, Scott Price; and
WHEREAS, Snow’s Garden and Landscaping Center, with almost 50 employees, remains committed to providing quality plants, professional landscape design, expert advice, and the highest customer service to thousands of gardeners; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Snow’s Garden and Landscaping Center on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Snow’s Garden and Landscaping Center as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes for continued success.
