Celebrating the life of the Reverend Dr. Marjorie Leeper Booker.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Marjorie Leeper Booker, a beloved pastor at Koinonia Christian Church, a role model for countless women, and a pioneering force for women in ministry, departed this life on December 10, 2011; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Marjorie Booker attended Richmond Public Schools and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in religious studies; she enrolled in the School of Theology at Virginia Union University, where she earned a master’s of divinity degree; and

WHEREAS, in 1976 Reverend Booker began her years of devoted service in the ministry when she was ordained by the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church; and

WHEREAS, after serving as pastor at St. John C.M.E. Church in Petersburg for two years, Reverend Booker became pastor of Koinonia C.M.E. Church, which is now called Koinonia Christian Church, where she served as an inspiring and dedicated leader for 31 years; and

WHEREAS, as a pastor, mentor, and counselor, Reverend Booker provided caring advice and guidance to members of her church and to the many people whose lives she touched in the community; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Booker believed in making a difference in her community and in the City of Richmond; she was actively involved in many local organizations and served with great diligence on several city commissions; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Booker, who received an honorary doctorate of divinity degree from the Higher Learning Bible Seminar, was pastor emeritus at Koinonia Christian Church at the time of her death; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Booker is greatly mourned by her husband, William; her children, Phyllis, William, and Jacqueline; and by many other family members, friends, and church members; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an active and influential pastor, mother, wife, and community leader, the Reverend Dr. Marjorie Leeper Booker; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Reverend Dr. Marjorie Leeper Booker as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
