HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 498
Commending Stephen L. Thompson, M.D.

WHEREAS, Stephen L. Thompson, M.D., a beloved and respected family practitioner in Rustburg, retired in September 2011; and

WHEREAS, in honor of his 43 years of caring for patients of all ages, the building where Dr. Thompson practiced was renamed the Stephen L. Thompson Medical Center; it is part of the Central Virginia Family Physicians medical group; and

WHEREAS, after receiving his medical degree from the University of Virginia, Dr. Thompson served in Vietnam as a battalion surgeon; during his tour of duty, he saved the lives of two Vietnamese children and earned two Bronze Stars for valor; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Thompson returned to Campbell County and opened Village Family Practice in Rustburg in 1968; for many years he was the only doctor in town, and often he would treat as many as 60 patients a day; and

WHEREAS, many of his patients remember the compassion and tireless care that Dr. Thompson provided; he made countless house calls and hospital visits during his career, and over the years he tended to the children and grandchildren of some of his earliest patients; and

WHEREAS, for more than 30 years, Dr. Thompson served as the county medical examiner, was the attending physician for Rustburg Correctional Unit #9, and gave generously of his time and talents attending to the less fortunate through his many hours of service to the free clinic at the Campbell County Health Department; and

WHEREAS, with characteristic concern for his patients, Dr. Thompson merged Village Family Practice with Central Virginia Family Physicians in the late 1990s to help ensure that the community he served would have continuing access to health care providers after he retired; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend a dedicated and honored family practitioner, Stephen L. Thompson, M.D.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stephen L. Thompson, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his many years of providing medical care to the residents of Campbell County.
