Celebrating the life of Alicia Marie Lannes.

WHEREAS, Alicia Marie Lannes of Centreville, a sweet, loving, and caring person, died on March 5, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Alicia Lannes was born on December 7, 1988, the younger of two children born to Greg Lannes, Sr., and Donna Lannes; and

WHEREAS, Alicia Lannes was a devoted and loving daughter, younger sister to Gregory Lannes, Jr., and friend to many, as well as a cheerleader and athlete who loved music and who stood out among her peers; and

WHEREAS, passionate, intelligent, and dedicated, Alicia Lannes graduated from Cub Run Elementary, Flint Hill Middle School, and Westfield High School as an Advanced Placement student with 18 college credits and attended Virginia Commonwealth University; and

WHEREAS, Alicia Lannes’ attributes included kindness, peacefulness, beauty, honesty, enthusiasm, courage, perseverance, and loyalty; and

WHEREAS, Alicia Lannes volunteered to work with the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with disabilities, youth-at-risk, and veterans, through the challenging, physically active sport of horseback riding; and

WHEREAS, Alicia Lannes wanted to devote future efforts to speaking to young girls on the consequences of keeping secrets of abuse; and

WHEREAS, Alicia Lannes evidenced great strength as she battled the daily impact of post traumatic stress syndrome and anxiety disorder caused by the crimes committed against her at the age of 14; and

WHEREAS, Alicia Lannes’ tragic death on March 5, 2008, served as the catalyst to launch a federal investigation that broke up a deadly heroin ring operating in Northern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Alicia Lannes’ life and spirit inspired her parents to share their daughter’s story to help save the lives of others, with their efforts already culminating in the establishment of the nonprofit foundation Alicia’s Compass, as well as the passage by the General Assembly of HB 1075 and SB 201, also known as Alicia’s Compass Law; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby honor the memory and legacy of Alicia Marie Lannes; and

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Donna and Gregory Lannes, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for Alicia Marie Lannes’ memory and legacy.
