2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Christiansburg area celebrated the safe return of Company C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia National Guard from Iraq on December 12, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Company C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia National Guard left Christiansburg on June 1, 2011, traveling to Fort Pickett and then Camp Atterbury, Indiana, to receive training before being deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn; and
WHEREAS, Company C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia National Guard formed part of Task Force 183, the largest single unit mobilization in the Virginia Army National Guard since World War II; and
WHEREAS, while in Iraq, Company C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia National Guard conducted 56 missions, providing convoy security to support the delivery of fuel, ammunition, food, and water and security for base defense operations; and
WHEREAS, convoy escort teams with Task Force 183 encountered 22 enemy attacks in Iraq that included small arms fire, indirect fire, and IED detonations; and
WHEREAS, highly trained Company C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia National Guard members earned 12 Bronze Stars, five Combat Infantry Badges, and one Combat Action Badge as a result of their actions in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, the members of Company C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia National Guard were warmly welcomed back to Christiansburg by loving family members and friends and look forward to returning to their civilian lives after distinguished service to their country; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Company C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia National Guard for its distinguished service to the Commonwealth and nation; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Company C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia National Guard as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the Regiment’s dedicated service and gratitude for its safe return.
