12104825DWHEREAS, a longtime resident of the Town of Montross in Westmoreland County, Billy Sydnor has faithfully served the Town in numerous capacities for half a century; and
WHEREAS, a native of Westmoreland County, Billy Sydnor grew up in the small community of Templesman’s Crossroads and graduated from Washington & Lee High School; and
WHEREAS, while attending the State Fair of Virginia one year, Billy Sydnor met his future wife, Pearl, and shortly after their marriage, the couple settled in Montross; and
WHEREAS, desirous to be of service to his new neighbors and community, Billy Sydnor joined the Westmoreland County Volunteer Fire Department, where he has compiled a remarkable record, having attended every monthly meeting for the past 48 years; and
WHEREAS, Billy Sydnor has played a vital role in protecting and safeguarding his fellow neighbors’ homes, lives, and property while responding to emergency calls and providing fire prevention information to county residents; and
WHEREAS, Billy Sydnor has battled all types of fires alongside his fellow firefighters over the course of his career, from his first fire, a forest fire, to an extremely dangerous crown fire, to kitchen and house fires; and
WHEREAS, even when not on duty, Billy Sydnor has responded to calls for help, once saving the home of his next-door neighbor when a kitchen fire broke out; and
WHEREAS, Billy Sydnor has served in virtually every role with the Westmoreland County Volunteer Fire Department and now is chief driver, ensuring the safe transportation of firefighters as they respond to calls; and
WHEREAS, Billy Sydnor has seen many changes and advances in firefighting since he first began his volunteer service and has been an exemplary role model for younger firefighters as they join the department; and
WHEREAS, Billy Sydnor has been supported in all his numerous community endeavors by his wife, Pearl; the couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; and
WHEREAS, known for his hard work and commitment to helping others, Billy Sydnor is a valued and beloved resident of the Town of Montross and has demonstrated the important role that involved citizens can play in their communities; and
WHEREAS, in honor of his distinguished service, Billy Sydnor was unanimously chosen as the Grand Marshal for Montross’ 2011 Fall Festival, where he rode with his beloved wife, Pearl, at the head of the parade, which welcomed local residents and visitors alike; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Billy Sydnor for his lifelong commitment and dedication to the Town of Montross and its citizens; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Billy Sydnor as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and gratitude for his remarkable record of service to his fellow residents.
