2012 SESSION
12105635DWHEREAS, in a historic performance capping an outstanding high school career, Cody Allala of Hopewell has become the only wrestler from the Central Region to win state championships in all four years of high school; only 17 other Virginia high school wrestlers are quadruple state champions; and
WHEREAS, Cody Allala, a 160-lb. senior at Hopewell High School, easily won the 2012 Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group AAA wrestling competition; in the four matches held at James W. Robinson, Jr., Secondary School in Fairfax, Cody Allala outscored his opponents 61 - 3; and
WHEREAS, during the 2012 VHSL championships, Cody Allala’s scores were 16 - 0 for the first match and 16 - 1 for the second match; in the semifinal round, Cody Allala faced Mark Darr of Hylton High School, winning 15 - 0, and he defeated Ryan Forrest of South Lakes High School 14 - 2 to claim the crown; and
WHEREAS, the road to becoming a four-time trophy winner began 12 years ago when Cody Allala first learned to wrestle at the Hopewell Takedown Club, a wrestling program for the city’s youth; the grappler now coaches at the club several nights a week; and
WHEREAS, by the time he entered Hopewell High School, Cody Allala was already recognized as a force to be reckoned with; he won state titles in the 145-lb. weight class as a freshman, in the 152-lb. weight class as a sophomore, and in the 160-lb. weight class during his junior and senior years; and
WHEREAS, in local competition, Cody Allala won Central District wrestling titles three times—the competition was not held his sophomore year because of weather—and he is one of only seven wrestlers from the Central Region to earn four regional titles; and
WHEREAS, Cody Allala, who plans to wrestle in college, is a three time All-Metro champion, and he has been a standout competitor at many tournaments, including the nationally recognized Big Blue, Virginia Duals, and the Walsh Ironman competitions; and
WHEREAS, Cody Allala’s lightning-fast abilities and tremendous talent helped Hopewell High School join the ranks of other Commonwealth high school wrestling powerhouses, including Grundy High School, Great Bridge High School, Maury High School, Frank W. Cox High School, and Granby High School; and
WHEREAS, Hopewell High School wrestling coach Mike Henderson attributes Cody Allala’s success to his training habits, work ethic, well-rounded character, and to his star athlete’s being “an all-around great kid”; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Cody Allala for winning the Virginia High School League state championship all four years of high school, from 2009 to 2012; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Cody Allala as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his stellar accomplishments and best wishes for the future.
