HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 479
Commending Dr. Charles P. Poland, Jr.

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles P. Poland, Jr., professor of history at Northern Virginia Community College’s Annandale Campus, was honored by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia with a 2012 Outstanding Faculty Award; and

WHEREAS, only the best of the Commonwealth’s faculty at public and private colleges and universities receive the prestigious Outstanding Faculty Award, which recognizes superior accomplishments in teaching, research, and public service; and

WHEREAS, as a young man, Charles Poland developed an interest in history after receiving a biography of Abraham Lincoln; he went on to receive bachelor’s and master’s degrees from American University and a doctorate from Western Colorado University; and

WHEREAS, in 1967 Dr. Poland joined the faculty of Northern Virginia Community College; over the past several decades, he has taught thousands of students while also appearing on television and radio programs and speaking before historic, civic, and educational groups; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Poland has made history come alive for his students through his well-known field-trip course, which takes students to Civil War battlefield sites and gives them the opportunity to view firsthand the locations of some of the war’s most famous battles; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Poland also created a mobile Civil War Museum, which showcases hundreds of artifacts and documents and which traveled to public schools in Northern Virginia before being installed at Northern Virginia Community College; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Poland’s scholarly efforts have resulted in seven books, ranging in topic from relatively unknown heroes of the Civil War, to the nation’s shift from an agrarian society to an urban society, to the impact of development; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Poland has garnered numerous awards and accolades over the course of his distinguished career, including the Northern Virginia Community College Student Government Association Most Outstanding Faculty Member and the Northern Virginia Community College Alumni Federation Faculty of the Year Award; and

WHEREAS, an enthusiastic educator, Dr. Poland has contributed to the body of knowledge in his field while also broadening the knowledge and understanding of his students and inspiring future historians; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Dr. Charles P. Poland, Jr., on his 2012 State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Charles P. Poland, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his contributions to the field of history and commitment to higher education in the Commonwealth.
