Commending Suzanne Harsel.

WHEREAS, Suzanne Harsel, an admired and respected member of the Fairfax County Planning Commission for almost 30 years, who served her community with diligence and responsibility, retired in 2011; and

WHEREAS, Suzanne Harsel first was appointed to the Fairfax County Planning Commission in 1982 to fill an unexpired term; she was reappointed to serve seven consecutive four-year terms, throughout which she ably represented the residents and businesses of Fairfax County; and

WHEREAS, Suzanne Harsel, who lives in the Country Club View community, brought diverse talents to her work as a Fairfax County Planning Commissioner; after earning a degree from Indiana University, she taught elementary school in Indiana, Germany, and Maryland; and

WHEREAS, upon moving to Fairfax County, Suzanne Harsel became a docent at the National Archives, and she managed the Virginia office of the Better Business Bureau; she continued her teaching career in the Fairfax County public school system and retired as an instructional assistant; and

WHEREAS, Suzanne Harsel’s talent and experience, and her careful attention to detail, were recognized by her fellow planning commissioners; she was Planning Commission Secretary in 1983 and Vice-Chair from 1984 to 1986; in 1989 she again was named secretary and served in that position for 22 consecutive terms; and

WHEREAS, during her many years of dedicated service to Fairfax County, Suzanne Harsel was a member of many Planning Commission committees, including the Redevelopment & Housing Committee, the Policy & Procedures Committee, and the Personnel & Budget Committee; and

WHEREAS, after nearly three decades of effective public service, Suzanne Harsel retired from the Planning Commission in 2011; as the member with the longest continuous service, she set a high standard for selflessness and dedication to the important work of local government; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend an esteemed and dedicated public servant, Suzanne Harsel; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Suzanne Harsel as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and appreciation for her many years of service to Fairfax County and to the Commonwealth.
