HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 477
Commending Nancy Sorrells.

WHEREAS, Nancy Sorrells admirably and capably represented the residents of the Riverheads District as a member of the Augusta County Board of Supervisors for eight years; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Riverheads High School, Nancy Sorrells earned a bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater College; she pursued further education at James Madison University, where she obtained a teaching certificate and earned a master’s degree in history; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Sorrells’ influence and knowledge in the field of regional historic preservation is far-reaching; she was a research historian for 10 years at the Frontier Culture Museum and worked at the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace in Staunton, and she continues her leadership role at the Augusta County Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Sorrells taught home-bound students in Augusta County for 10 years; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Sorrells is a journalist, editor, outdoors writer, and a founder of Lots Wife Publishing; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Sorrells’ experiences as a teacher and writer gave her insight into many of the cares and concerns of Augusta County’s residents; and

WHEREAS, a resident of the Cold Springs area of Augusta County, Nancy Sorrells was elected to the board of supervisors in 2003; she worked diligently for the betterment of Augusta during her tenure, dedicating time and energy to the many issues that came before the board; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the board of supervisors, Nancy Sorrells focused on the efficient and effective operation of Augusta County government; she also has worked to promote wise land use and sound agricultural practices; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Sorrells, at the completion of two terms on the board, stepped down in 2011; she derived great satisfaction from her eight years of elected public service and hopes the experience and knowledge she gained as the Riverheads District supervisor can be put to good use in future volunteer work in Augusta County; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Sorrells looks forward to spending more time with her family and pursuing her many interests, including work with the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and freelance writing; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend a dedicated public servant and Virginia citizen, Nancy Sorrells; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nancy Sorrells as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and gratitude for her hard work and service to the citizens of Augusta County.
