HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 476 Offered February 29, 2012 Commending J. Mikel Clements. ---------- Patron-- Cline ----------

WHEREAS, J. Mikel Clements has served the City of Buena Vista over the course of 27 years as a member of the Buena Vista City Council and as mayor; and

WHEREAS, J. Mikel “Mike” Clements first became a member of the Buena Vista City Council on July 1, 1984, and served for two years, until June 30, 1986; he was a hard-working public servant and diligently worked for the betterment of his beautiful home city throughout his years in local government; and

WHEREAS, the residents of Buena Vista again benefited from Mike Clements’ dedication to his community when he served on the city council from July 1, 1990, through June 30, 1994; he also held city council office a third time, from October 13, 2005, until June 30, 2008; and

WHEREAS, continuing his work on behalf of the residents and businesses of Buena Vista, Mike Clements became mayor on July 1, 2008, and served in that capacity until December 31, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Mike Clements has also contributed to his community through his volunteer work with the Buena Vista Rescue Squad, as a dedicated employee of local industries, and as a small business owner; and

WHEREAS, Mike Clements chose not to seek reelection and plans to spend more time with his loving family; and

WHEREAS, Mike Clements tirelessly worked on behalf of the City of Buena Vista over the course of nearly three decades; his efficiency and effectiveness were invaluable, and he placed great emphasis on working cooperatively with the neighboring municipalities of Lexington and Rockbridge County, with state officials, and with federal representatives and agencies; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend a dedicated and effective public servant, J. Mikel Clements; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to J. Mikel Clements as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his service to the City of Buena Vista.
