2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr., a native son and beloved father and grandfather, was born on March 31, 1924, and entered into eternal rest on September 15, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr., attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1947; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr., valiantly served this nation during World War II as a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, and was stationed in Grafton Underwood, England; he was the Captain of a B-17, completed 35 missions, and received the Distinguished Flying Cross; and
WHEREAS, as a member of the United States Counselor Service, Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr., served in several German cities to assist in the rebuilding of postwar Germany; and
WHEREAS, in 1955 Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr., started a successful career as an investment advisor and stockbroker and was employed for more than 40 years in the securities business with Davenport & Co., Scott & Stringfellow, and Wheat Securities in Richmond; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr., was an avid sailor and was one of the first members of the Fishing Bay Yacht Club; a voracious reader of many subjects, he also reviewed books for the local newspaper; he loved music and was a founder of the Richmond Symphony; and he was a faithful member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Sons of the Revolution, and the Country Club of Virginia, where he enjoyed playing tennis with longtime friends and tennis partners; and
WHEREAS, on December 17, 2011, a mere three months after the death of Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr., his beloved wife, Sophie Ann Salley, a longtime Richmond political and social activist, joined him in eternal rest, and their family, friends, colleagues, and associates sadly grieve their loss and share loving memories of them both; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr., will be remembered lovingly by his children and grandchildren, his many friends, and other persons whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas Raysor Salley, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
