HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 46
Commending Jerry Campbell.

WHEREAS, Jerry Campbell, the principal of the City of Salem’s Andrew Lewis Middle School for 21 years, retired in 2011 after a distinguished educational career that spanned nearly 40 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell, a former teacher, coach, and assistant principal, took the helm of Andrew Lewis Middle School in 1990, and worked diligently to foster a positive learning environment for the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students; and

WHEREAS, an excellent and hardworking administrator, Dr. Campbell understood that middle school-aged children encounter many changes and much growth during those formative years and encouraged parents, faculty, and staff to support students in their endeavors; and

WHEREAS, committed to academic excellence for his students, Dr. Campbell led Andrew Lewis Middle School to many successes, including three consecutive Governor’s Awards for Educational Excellence from the State Board of Education; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell served as a role model to countless students, taking a genuine interest in them as individuals while also providing firm discipline as they faced life’s daily challenges; and

WHEREAS, over the course of Dr. Campbell’s career, he witnessed many changes in education, including the advent of technology in the classroom and the implementation of Standards of Learning; and

WHEREAS, a tireless supporter of his teachers and staff, Dr. Campbell mentored future teachers and administrators, providing wise counsel based on his years of experience working in the educational system; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell was deeply honored to be selected as the Middle School Principal of the Year by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals at the conclusion of his outstanding educational career and looks forward to spending time with family during his well-deserved retirement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Jerry Campbell on his exemplary career in education on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jerry Campbell as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation and gratitude for his years of service and commitment to the youth of the Roanoke Valley.
