Celebrating the life of Roger Lee Zirkle.

WHEREAS, Roger Lee Zirkle, a strong advocate for the youth of Augusta County as an eight-year representative of the Beverley Manor District on the Augusta County School Board, died on November 1, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of West Virginia, Roger Zirkle graduated from Philip Barbour High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Shepperd College, where he played football; and

WHEREAS, a hardworking business manager and valued employee, Roger Zirkle spent 10 years with Morton Frozen Foods and 20 years with Hershey Chocolate, gaining valuable practical experience and insight into the needs of companies; and

WHEREAS, in 2004 Roger Zirkle joined the Augusta County School Board; his popularity and effectiveness resulted in his election to a second term of office, a position he held at the time of his passing; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the Valley Vocational-Technical Center’s board of trustees, Roger Zirkle served as a strong proponent of career and technical education to prepare students to enter the workforce; and

WHEREAS, committed to the youth of Augusta County, Roger Zirkle visited different schools to converse with students and staff and gain a firsthand knowledge of their concerns; and

WHEREAS, during Roger Zirkle’s tenure on the Augusta County School Board, the expansion of Wilson Elementary School began, renovations on Wilson Memorial High School and Stuarts Draft High School were completed, and the construction of Wilson Middle School was finished; and

WHEREAS, an admired leader, Roger Zirkle provided valuable guidance and support as an active member of the Virginia School Boards Association; and

WHEREAS, an avid outdoorsman, Roger Zirkle loved fishing and hunting; was a 40-year member of the Augusta Archers; coached football and baseball; and raised over $50,000 bicycling for the National MS Society as he battled the disease himself, for which he was inducted into the organization’s Hall-of-Fame; and

WHEREAS, a deeply spiritual man, Roger Zirkle served as a deacon and moderator at Fishersville Baptist Church, where he enjoyed worship and fellowship; and

WHEREAS, an exemplary role model, Roger Zirkle served his community and the youth of Augusta County with great integrity and passion; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Roger Zirkle will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 34 years, Linda; children, Kevin and Rodney, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired citizen of Augusta County, Roger Lee Zirkle; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Roger Lee Zirkle as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
