12105476DWHEREAS, James Willard Lineweaver, who served the town of Warrenton with great diligence and effectiveness for 39 years as a member of the Warrenton Town Council and as mayor, died on February 15, 2012; and
WHEREAS, J. Willard “Bill” Lineweaver, who was born in the Shenandoah Valley, moved to Fauquier County when he was a young boy; he enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe, receiving the Bronze Star; and
WHEREAS, Bill Lineweaver went into the furniture business following his return home and operated H.B. Carter furniture store in Warrenton for many years, serving thousands of customers from around the area as Fauquier County’s population expanded in the post-war years; and
WHEREAS, Bill Lineweaver entered local politics in 1959 when he was elected to the Warrenton Town Council, beginning nearly four decades of public service to the community and leading the town through a time of great change and growth; and
WHEREAS, Bill Lineweaver, who served as a member of the Warrenton Town Council until 1974, ran unopposed for his last three terms; he became mayor of Warrenton in 1974 and served for six unopposed terms until 1998; and
WHEREAS, Warrenton saw many changes during Bill Lineweaver’s time in local government, and he managed and guided the town with wise counsel and thoughtful decisions; he also served as president of the Virginia Municipal League in 1988 - 1989, willingly sharing his expertise and advice; and
WHEREAS, Bill Lineweaver worked to improve his community and the Commonwealth; he was a member and former chairman of the Vint Hill Economic Development Authority, and he served as a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council under two governors; and
WHEREAS, those remaining to fondly cherish Bill Lineweaver’s memory are his wife of 69 years, Elizabeth; their three daughters, Beth, Babs, and Bitsy, and their families; and many other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an effective and respected leader of Warrenton, James Willard Lineweaver; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James Willard Lineweaver as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory and appreciation for his many years of dedicated public service.
