12105493DWHEREAS, John Weldon McCain of Ringgold, a dedicated volunteer first responder, whose contributions to his community, his church, and his family were generous and selfless, died on August 3, 2011; and
WHEREAS, a native of Pittsylvania County, John McCain was educated in the Pittsylvania County public school system and proudly served in the United States Army; he spent his professional career at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, retiring after 36 years; and
WHEREAS, John McCain joined the Ringgold Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department in 2005 and was a valued and trusted member, serving on the Candidate Committee, which works with and acts as mentors to new fire and rescue volunteers; and
WHEREAS, during his years of service with the Ringgold Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, John McCain was one of the top five call runners; he was known for the attention and care he gave to patients as they were being transported to area hospitals; and
WHEREAS, John McCain was held in high esteem by his fellow first responders; he received the department’s Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Award in 2008, and in 2010, he was voted Fireman of the Year by his peers; and
WHEREAS, after his death, the members of the Ringgold Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department named the annual EMT award the John McCain EMT Award in his honor, recognizing his many worthwhile contributions to the department and to the greater Ringgold community; and
WHEREAS, John McCain joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church when he was young, and over the years he served in many capacities; he was chairman of the deacon’s ministry, a member of the men’s ministry, a Sunday school and Vacation Bible school teacher, superintendent of Sunday school, and a member of the male chorus; and
WHEREAS, throughout his life, John McCain worked to make his community a better place; he was active in local voter registration efforts, was a member and past division chairman of United Steelworkers Local 831, was Worshipful Master of Danville Royal Lodge #104, and was a past laymen president and trustee of the Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Association; and
WHEREAS, John McCain, who was predeceased by Esther, his wife of 36 years, will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his son, Keith, and his family, and by many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an outstanding Virginian who selflessly devoted his time and his many talents to making his community a better place, John Weldon McCain; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Weldon McCain as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory and appreciation for his many years of service to Pittsylvania County.
