Commending the Rappahannock Valley Amateur Radio Club.

WHEREAS, in 2012 the Rappahannock Valley Amateur Radio Club celebrates its 60th anniversary of providing communications and emergency response support to organizations, businesses, and individuals in the greater Fredericksburg area; and

WHEREAS, the Rappahannock Valley Radio Club was established in 1952, and after several reorganizations, in 1995, the club became known as the Rappahannock Valley Amateur Radio Club (RVARC); and

WHEREAS, the club has provided communications support to many local organizations over the years, and this service continues to be a vital part of its mission; as early as 1955, the RVARC worked with the Fredericksburg Christmas Parade to help ensure the event’s smooth operation; and

WHEREAS, during the Virginia Operations Plan Exercises at the North Anna Power Station, RVARC members provide critical communications support for the nuclear power plant and for emergency responders in Spotsylvania and Orange counties, and for other organizations involved in this full-scale emergency response exercise; and

WHEREAS, starting in 1981, the RVARC provided logistical and on-air support at the National Scout Jamboree held at Camp A.P. Hill in Caroline County, and the group also has supported the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross for many years; and

WHEREAS, in 2012 members of the RVARC will be helping at the Special Olympics Virginia Basketball Championships, the Heritage Festival run, the YMCA Colonial Beach International Triathlon, The Cannonball Century bike ride, and at many other events; and

WHEREAS, the RVARC encourages people interested in becoming amateur radio operators to sign up for one of its beginner classes; the group also offers testing for the federal amateur radio operator’s certification, and provides technical support and assistance; and

WHEREAS, members of the RVARC built an Emergency Communications Center for the Rappahannock Area Office of the American Red Cross; it is just one example of how the organization’s 105 members help their community in times of natural disasters or other emergencies; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Rappahannock Valley Amateur Radio Club hereby be commended on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Rappahannock Valley Amateur Radio Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and respect for its many services to the Fredericksburg region.
