Commending Belvedere Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Belvedere Elementary School, located in Falls Church, was honored to receive a 2012 Rising Star Award from the Virginia State Board of Education; and

WHEREAS, the Rising Star Award, presented to only two schools in the Commonwealth in 2012, recognizes schools that meet all state and federal accountability standards for two consecutive years and that have significantly improved their Virginia Index of Performance from the previous year; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Index of Performance program recognizes schools and school divisions for the achievement of excellence goals established by the governor and Board of Education; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Principal Cecilia Vanderhye, Belvedere Elementary School students learn about a variety of subjects from committed and innovative teachers in a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment; and

WHEREAS, Belvedere Elementary School offers a wide array of programs designed to facilitate academic excellence and includes family members in the learning process; and

WHEREAS, Partners in Print, a family literacy program for students from preschool age to second grade, teaches parents how to share the love of reading at home while the Parents as Educational Partners program helps parents of students in English for Speakers of Other Languages improve their English and gain confidence in participating in Belvedere Elementary School activities; and

WHEREAS, students in grades three through five at Belvedere Elementary School, identified as academically advanced, also have the opportunity to participate in the Advanced Academics Center, which provides extra instruction from an Advanced Academic Resource Teacher; and

WHEREAS, Belvedere Elementary School takes great pride in receiving the Virginia State Board of Education’s 2012 Rising Star Award and remains dedicated to preparing students for their futures; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Belvedere Elementary School on its selection as a 2012 Rising Star Award recipient from the Virginia State Board of Education; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Cecilia Vanderhye, principal of Belvedere Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the school’s commitment to academic excellence for its students.
