Commending Ann Monday.

WHEREAS, Ann Monday has announced her retirement in 2012 as the Superintendent of the City of Fairfax Schools; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday came to the City of Fairfax after an illustrious 35-year career with Fairfax County Public Schools, where she had served as Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services; Cluster VI Superintendent; Principal, Robinson Secondary School and Longfellow Middle School; Associate Principal, Fairfax High School and Robinson Secondary School; Subschool Principal, Lake Braddock Secondary School; and Teacher, Kilmer Intermediate and Chantilly High Schools; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday led the City of Fairfax Schools from 2007 to 2012 as the Superintendent of Schools; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday worked collaboratively with Fairfax County Public Schools personnel, resulting in the successful execution of the School Services Agreement to ensure exemplary instructional programs, creative school leadership, and safe and secure buildings, in alignment with school board goals; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday managed the close-out of renovations at Lanier Middle School and Fairfax High School and presided over the rededication of these two state-of-the-art facilities; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday has demonstrated diligent stewardship in the development and execution of annual school board budgets and worked collaboratively with the mayor, city council members, and City of Fairfax staff; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday supported the school board goal to increase communication opportunities with all school stakeholders by creating multiple online communication vehicles; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday was instrumental in working with Fairfax County Public Schools officials to select and hire outstanding principals to lead the City of Fairfax Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday served as mentor for City principals as they worked to close achievement gaps and provide quality learning experiences for all students; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday unfailingly communicated her high expectations regarding the importance of academic achievement for all students to the community, parents, school staff, and students; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday consistently focused on providing an instructional program in which students have many opportunities to achieve at their highest potential and identify their passions and talents; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday has been a powerful advocate for students, resulting in the creation of innovative programs enabling schools to enhance and extend summer and extended-day learning opportunities, support training and implementation of twenty-first century thinking skills, expand online SAT preparation courses, increase and enhance classroom technology, introduce innovative language learning experiences, and fund teacher training and resources that have had a positive impact on student achievement during her tenure; and

WHEREAS, Ann Monday will be greatly missed in her role as advocate, supporter, mentor, and colleague by the City of Fairfax School Board members, school administrators and teachers, parents, community members, and her staff; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Ann Monday on the occasion of her retirement as the Superintendent of the City of Fairfax Schools; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ann Monday as an expression of the General Assembly’s deepest appreciation for her vision, leadership, and dedication to students, staff, families, and community and best wishes in her future endeavors.
