Commending Robert F. Lederer.

WHEREAS, Robert F. Lederer, the mayor of the City of Fairfax since 2002, has diligently and admirably served its residents over the course of three decades, first as a member of the Fairfax City Council and for the past decade as mayor; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lederer is the second generation in his family to be involved in city government; his father was a member of the Fairfax City Council and Robert Lederer is proud to continue the family’s tradition of municipal service; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lederer, who was born and raised in Fairfax, attended Green Acres Elementary School, Sidney Lanier Middle School, and Fairfax High School; he is a graduate of the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lederer has been involved in local government for many years; he served five two-year terms on the Fairfax City Council starting in 1982, working always to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the city’s affairs; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as mayor, Robert Lederer was at the forefront of the effort to redevelop Old Town Fairfax, which has resulted in the construction of a new library, a shopping center, and townhouses in the city’s downtown center; and

WHEREAS, infrastructure improvements that have taken place while Robert Lederer has been mayor of the City of Fairfax include building a new police headquarters, the addition of a wing at City Hall, and a new community center for all residents to use and enjoy; and

WHEREAS, while Robert Lederer has been mayor, the City of Fairfax was given a highly sought after AAA bond rating from Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s Investors Services, which reflects the city’s careful and prudent fiscal practices; and

WHEREAS, during Robert Lederer’s tenure, the City of Fairfax was named as one of the top three places to live in the United States by Forbes magazine—reinforcing what the city’s 22,000 residents already knew—and was awarded a gold medal by the National Recreation and Parks Association; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lederer recognized the urgent need to protect the environment and the city’s groundwater supplies by providing leadership as the City of Fairfax worked to implement regulations that would help prevent oil and gas spills within the city limits; and

WHEREAS, in his role as mayor, Robert Lederer is the City of Fairfax’s representative on many regional boards and authorities, including the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, the Virginia Municipal League Transportation Policy Committee, and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Aviation Policy Committee; and

WHEREAS, Robert Lederer has diligently and capably served the City of Fairfax, first as a council member and then as mayor for 10 years; he has rendered a great service in his selfless work and dedication to the city; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend an outstanding and dedicated public servant, Robert F. Lederer; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robert F. Lederer as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and appreciation for his many accomplishments on behalf of the citizens of the City of Fairfax.
