WHEREAS, George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2012; and

WHEREAS, George C. Marshall High School, which serves students in Vienna, Tysons Corner, and Falls Church, is one of the top-performing high schools in Virginia; its student body reflects and celebrates Northern Virginia’s ethnic diversity; and

WHEREAS, George C. Marshall High School prepares its students to be successful citizens of a global community; it is the only public high school in the United States named for George Catlett Marshall and the school’s nickname – “The Statesmen” – appropriately reflects his life and contributions; and

WHEREAS, once noted as the “organizer of victory” by Winston Churchill for his leadership of the Allied victory in World War II, General George C. Marshall served as the United States Army Chief of Staff during the war and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt; as Secretary of State, his name was given to the Marshall Plan, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953; and

WHEREAS, George C. Marshall High School in Fairfax County offers an intellectually challenging curriculum; the school has a diploma achievement rate of 94 percent, and its comprehensive extracurricular program permits many opportunities for student participation; and

WHEREAS, the International Baccalaureate (IB) program is offered at George C. Marshall High School, and the Marshall Academy, which is open to juniors and seniors, provides a rigorous program in science, business, marketing, and technology; and

WHEREAS, with more than 100 faculty members, George C. Marshall High School’s comprehensive curriculum emphasizes academics along with fine arts and technical instruction; the newly implemented Learn program allows struggling students to get the help they need; and

WHEREAS, George C. Marshall High School in Fairfax County has a strong tradition of excellence in athletics and the arts; the Statesmen have won five state championships in theater since 2000, were boys’ cross country champions in 1971 and 1972, and were girls’ basketball champion in 1976; and

WHEREAS, George C. Marshall High School’s 50th anniversary gala celebration will be held on November 9, 2012, and will feature distinguished speakers, dinner, dancing, and a silent auction; all alumni, parents, and members of the school community are encouraged to attend; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend George C. Marshall High School on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jay Pearson, principal of George C. Marshall High School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for providing a stellar education to students in Fairfax County and best wishes for the next 50 years.
