12105430DWHEREAS, the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust celebrates 40 years of philanthropy and service to the Cities of Lynchburg and Bedford and to the Counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust came into existence on October 12, 1972; an employee of Fidelity National Bank had asked the company’s Suggestion Committee a few months earlier to consider forming a community trust; and
WHEREAS, the board of directors of Fidelity National Bank created the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust to administer and invest gifts and bequests to benefit the designated localities; it provides grants to help children, youth, the needy, and the elderly and to support education, health, the arts, the humanities, and historic preservation; and
WHEREAS, the trust’s initial funding totaled $14,000; since its founding, generous donors have given more than $29 million to the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, enabling the organization to disburse over $11 million in grants that benefit the greater Lynchburg area; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust works to promote local philanthropy, receiving and managing permanent gifts for perpetual benefit of the greater Lynchburg area; currently, the Trust has 124 special and unrestricted funds whose assets are managed by banks and investment advisors; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust encourages people and organizations to donate to existing funds, establish a new fund, or apply for a grant; the Trust’s website emphasizes ease of use and welcomes telephone calls or online requests; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust kicked off its 40th anniversary celebration with a luncheon that was held on October 13, 2011; Dr. William F. Quillian, Jr., the Trust’s first executive director, was the featured speaker; and
WHEREAS, the 40th Anniversary Steering Committee, which is ably chaired by Mary Jane Dolan and Ellen P. Jamerson, has planned a series of celebratory events, and the final gala celebration will be held on October 18, 2012, at Lynchburg College; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stuart C. Fauber, the president and chief executive officer of the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and respect for its philanthropic and charitable work serving the people and institutions of the Cities of Lynchburg and Bedford, and the Counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell.
