12105149DWHEREAS, the Honorable Thomas Nelson Nance, an esteemed jurist who ably served the residents of the City of Richmond for 25 years, died on February 3, 2012; and
WHEREAS, a native of North Carolina, Thomas Nance earned a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and moved to Richmond in 1960; and
WHEREAS, after spending several years as an insurance adjuster, Thomas Nance returned to school, where he earned a law degree at the University of Richmond’s T.C. Williams School of Law; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Nance embarked on his distinguished legal career as house counsel for a mortgage banking company, later opening his own law practice and providing outstanding service to his clients; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Nance also served as a part-time assistant commonwealth’s attorney for the City of Richmond and as a substitute judge prior to his appointment to the City of Richmond’s General District Court, Manchester Division in 1977; and
WHEREAS, for 25 years, Thomas Nance presided with great wisdom and commitment to fairness and justice, eventually retiring from the Richmond Circuit Court in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Judge Nance earned the respect of defense attorneys and prosecutors alike with his formidable knowledge of the law and developed a reputation for conducting fair trials in a no-nonsense manner; and
WHEREAS, throughout the course of his exemplary career, Judge Nance made many contributions to the Commonwealth’s judicial system; and
WHEREAS, a devoted family man who deeply treasured his friendships and enjoyed the companionship of animals, Thomas Nance will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Kris, and her family; and numerous other family members, friends, and former colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired jurist, the Honorable Thomas Nelson Nance; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable Thomas Nelson Nance as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
