HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 406
Celebrating the life of Mary Ann Pace McGee.

WHEREAS, Mary Ann Pace McGee, an admired teacher and librarian who devoted countless hours to the betterment of her beloved hometown of Ridgeway, died on July 28, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Ridgeway High School and Radford University, Mary McGee also completed graduate work at Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated educator with Martinsville City Public Schools and Henry County Public Schools, Mary McGee worked diligently to create a positive learning environment for all her students and served as a curriculum principal on the elementary school level; and

WHEREAS, following many years of exemplary service as a teacher, Mary McGee then became a librarian at Drewry Mason High School in Ridgeway, where she played a vital role in providing needed resources to students and teachers; and

WHEREAS, Mary McGee strongly believed that students and community members would greatly benefit from having a library and joined with other like-minded individuals to raise funds for the construction of the Ridgeway Branch Library; and

WHEREAS, an enthusiastic advocate, Mary McGee cheerfully worked alongside other volunteers to raise over $500,000 for the building, which today provides patrons with a wide variety of books and materials for their education and enjoyment; and

WHEREAS, Mary McGee graciously gave of her time and energy to numerous other community organizations, including the Blue Ridge Regional Library Association, Morehead Memorial Hospital Board, Patrick Henry Community College Foundation, Piedmont Arts Association, and Virginia Museum of Natural History; and

WHEREAS, Mary McGee was also a member of the General Joseph Martin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Bassett Historical Center, and Henry County Heritage Book Committee; and

WHEREAS, Mary McGee took an avid interest in the history of her hometown, cowriting The Life and Times of Ridgeway, Virginia, and serving as church historian at Ridgeway United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime member; and

WHEREAS, Mary McGee received numerous awards and accolades for her community service, including a 1993 Outstanding Alumnus Award from Radford University and the 2004 Jack Dalton Community Service Award from the Henry County Board of Supervisors; she was also the co-recipient of the 1994 Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Martinsville Exchange Club; and

WHEREAS, a gracious and compassionate woman, Mary McGee leaves behind a wonderful legacy of service to the Town of Ridgeway and its youth; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Scottie, and daughter, Susan, Mary McGee will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her son, John; three grandchildren; other family members and friends; and the residents of the Town of Ridgeway; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired citizen of Henry County, Mary Ann Pace McGee; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mary Ann Pace McGee as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
