WHEREAS, Dominion Virginia Power was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, Inc., with a prestigious 2012 Best of Reston Award; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston Awards were established to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the greater Reston community and improving the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, a vital member of the Reston community, Dominion Virginia Power provides essential services to local residents and businesses and partners with local organizations to support veterans, ensure that those facing financial hardship have heated homes, and encourage local students in their endeavors; and

WHEREAS, committed to helping those in need, Dominion Virginia Power works with Reston Interfaith to identify eligible families in the Reston-Herndon area for participation in EnergyShare, Dominion Virginia Power’s energy assistance program; and

WHEREAS, in December 2010, Dominion Virginia Power contributed $25,000 to the Reston Interfaith Housing Corporation for use in weatherizing and reducing energy costs in the nonprofit corporation’s townhomes while employees of the energy company also volunteered their time and skills to weatherize townhouses and the Embry Rucker Community Shelter; and

WHEREAS, Dominion Virginia Power has played a pivotal role in educational programs in the greater Reston area, contributing $5,000 to Dogwood Elementary School’s Girls Excelling in Math and Science club and supporting Rachel Carson Middle School’s Future Renewable Energy Effort project; and

WHEREAS, Dominion Virginia Power employees volunteered at Ethics Day programs at South Lakes, James Madison, and George C. Marshall High Schools and as mentors at Oak Hill Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Dominion Virginia Power proudly sponsored the Dominion Trail Mix event to celebrate the area’s Washington and Old Dominion Trail, which featured community clean-up projects, a festival, and other related events; and

WHEREAS, Dominion Virginia Power also contributed a $10,000 matching grant to the Northern Virginia Regional Park Foundation’s “Nature Nuts” environmental education program, which provides students the opportunity to engage with nature; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to the communities where it does business and its employees live, Dominion Virginia Power has helped improve the quality of life for local Reston residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Dominion Virginia Power on its outstanding service to the residents of Northern Virginia and on its well-deserved honor as a 2012 Best of Reston Award recipient; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dominion Virginia Power as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for its tireless dedication to Reston.
