2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, Samuel A. Kushner was named the Citizen of the Year for 2011 by the Kiwanis Club of Danville; and
WHEREAS, Samuel A. “Sam” Kushner, a retired attorney, grew up in Danville, and he and his wife agreed early in their marriage to live and raise their family in Danville; with that decision, he set out to become involved in improving his community; and
WHEREAS, Sam Kushner made a positive impact in his lifetime of work to make his community better; he served in local government, was involved in many community organizations, and has been a lifelong member of Temple Beth Sholom; and
WHEREAS, Sam Kushner was a member of the Danville City Council for 10 years and served as mayor for two years; during those years of public service, he stayed focused on what was best for Danville, notably during a lengthy and complex annexation case; and
WHEREAS, Sam Kushner served as president of the Danville Jaycees, the Morotock Fund of the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, the Dan River Alliance for Arts & Culture, and the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region; and
WHEREAS, a love of the arts was instilled in Sam Kushner when he was young, and he continues to promote the work of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History; he is a former president of the museum and currently is a director, encouraging its outreach efforts in the community; and
WHEREAS, a man of faith, Sam Kushner is a trustee and secretary of the board of managers at Temple Beth Sholom; he recently led a successful fundraising campaign to install an elevator, a ramp, and building upgrades; and
WHEREAS, Sam Kushner retired from the practice of law in 2010; one of his favorite pastimes is taking photographs of his grandchildren, and he is locally renowned for the 38 varieties of hybrid tea roses he grows, giving away most of the beautiful blooms as gifts; and
WHEREAS, in retirement Sam Kushner continues to give his time to the residents and businesses of Danville, serving on the boards of the Roman Eagle Memorial Home, the Stratford Tennis Club, and First Citizens Bank; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Samuel A. Kushner on being named the Citizen of the Year for 2011 by the Kiwanis Club of Danville; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Samuel A. Kushner as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for his many years of service to the residents of Danville.
